Proposed cuts to social services do not represent best interests of Missourians

In a letter to the editor, Ruth Ehresman discusses proposed cuts to social services in Missouri and the impact of those cuts on both the recipients of the services and workers employed by state social service agencies.

Sen. Schaefer wants to cut the growth of social service programs. He uses a sledgehammer where a thoughtfully employed scalpel would be more appropriate. His plan does not take into account the growth in cost that has nothing to do with those who receive services (such as increased pharmacy costs driven by consolidation of drug companies), nor growth in the number needing services (such as increased number of children who are abused/neglected).

Ruth staffs the St. Louis Family and Community Partnership and the Missouri Children’s Leadership Council. Read the entire letter at stltoday.com.
