More than 300 community leaders, child-serving professionals and child advocates attended the St. Louis Metropolitan Children's Summit on Nov. 15 at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis. The event was presented by the St. Louis Metropolitan Children's Agenda initiative of Vision for Children at Risk.
Keynote speaker Dr. Pedro Noguera of New York University urged the St. Louis community to work together to improve public schools. "All parts of the community should be involved and work together. Reform fails if it is top-down," he said.
There is no one magic solution or savior, he said, and communities should build from schools that are working well.
A key element in a successful school is a strong culture that promotes positive expectations attitudes and beliefs. Discipline is successful when teachers and administration establish moral authority and teach good social relationships.
"The future of this city is at stake in whatever you do," Dr. Noguera said.
